This ruby-red Langhe Mertlot combines structure and elegance. Its harmonious balance and finely tuned tannins make it particularly inviting. An intense bouquet of cherries and plums unfolds on the nose, complemented by refined nuances of dark chocolate, mushrooms, balsamic nuances of dried flowers, licorice, and sweet tobacco.
Merlot Langhe
Since 1981, Mario Costa has been cultivating Merlot in the sun-drenched slopes of the region – a variety not native to these lands, yet one that has revealed remarkable character over the decades. To ensure the highest quality, the finest clusters are meticulously selected on the vine in June. This strict yield reduction leaves just 800–900 grams per plant, enhancing concentration and finesse.
While the average Merlot yield stands at around 6,000 kilograms per hectare, Mario Costa limits production to only 1,750 kilograms. Harvest takes place by hand between September 15 and 25, with the grapes gently placed in 20-kilogram crates to arrive at the winery in pristine condition.
There, the fruit is delicately destemmed and fermented at controlled temperatures. A brief maceration of four to five days prevents the extraction of green and bitter tannins, before the malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel. The wine then matures for ten months in a combination of seasoned barriques and new tonneaux, gaining depth and complexity.
Following its time in wood, the wine rests for a further two years in bottle – a patient process that rewards with a harmonious, multi-layered Merlot, released only when it has reached its full potential.
